Little Member Education Programs
Ahoy, Electric Cooperative Friends!
Since late 2024, we have created some pretty fun new projects focused on our little members.
We have a robust communication strategy to reach our members, subscribers, and even the youth of our community through various programs, but most of those efforts start in late elementary. We wanted to create a program for us that would be a fun way to reach lower elementary students for a few reasons:
-
Educate them early about cooperatives, careers, and electric safety.
-
Build brand awareness and affinity early! Students (and teachers) LOVE these programs!
-
Reach their parents through them!
This age group still loves books, but for the most part they can’t read. So, when we give them a book, they take it home and their parents/guardians read it to them and the parents may learn something themselves in addition to seeing the cooperative taking an active interest in the education and safety of their children.
In the cooperative spirit, we want to share! Below you will find two programs we have started that are focused on educating children in preschool – second grade.
If you have any questions, please email Patrick Wood at pwood@co-mo.coop. If you plan to use any of the items below, let us know that too! You are welcome to use it how you want/need. We are just curious where it is being used and would love to hear your plans to see if you are adding elements we would like to admire and acquire!
A Lineman’s Day with Lineman Larry and
A Lineworker's Day with Lineman Larry & Kilowatt Katie
This program was created to be used in April for Lineworker Appreciation Day, but it can be used at any time as a great education tool for young kids that also serves as an opportunity to plant the seed of a future career opportunity later on!
This is a Flat Stanley-inspired program where students are encouraged to color in a Lineman Larry, or Kilowatt Katie, cut them out, and take pictures teaching them about what they are learning about in school, or simply take Lineman Larry or Kilowatt Katie on fun adventures. In return, Lineman Larry and Kilowatt Katie want to teach them as well! That is where the book comes in! The book highlights a day in the life of a lineworker.
Below, you will find a readable digital versions of the books. You are welcome to link to your website along with a PDF link for the book if you would like to have it printed by your local printer. We used Modern Litho here in Missouri. If you want information on that, let me know! You will also find a PDF link for the digital version of the book, coloring pages, a worksheet asking students to write letters to linemen, and a lesson plan for teachers!
Feel free to customize all of these how you want/need!
Cat & Duck Books
The first Cat and Duck children’s book teaches about electric cooperatives. When the power goes out at Cat and Duck’s house, they hop into their Anywhere and Everywhere Machine to learn about what cooperatives are, how they started, how they are powered, and how important they are to the members they serve!
The second Cat and Duck book is focused on electric safety! Cat and Duck engage with the reader to highlight the importance of electric safety, showcasing safety scenarios children may encounter. The book focuses on the proper use of electric outlets, the dangers of playing near powerlines and pad-mounted transformers, downed power lines, and more!
Since we created Cat and Duck and the Electric Cooperative at the end of October 2024, it has grown in popularity and is now being used by cooperatives in more than 26 states!
Below, you will find a readable digital version of the books. You are welcome to link to your website along with a PDF link for the books if you would like to have them printed by your local printer. Again, we used Modern Litho here in Missouri, who does an outstanding job! You will also find a PDF link for the digital version of the book, as well as some PNG images to use!
