REGISTRATION DEADLINE NEAR FOR BACK TO SCHOOL FAIR; VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The deadline to register for the fifth-annual Moniteau County Back to School Fair is near.

The fair is organized by the Moniteau County Alliance for Kids and will run from 9 a.m.to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 26 at California High School. The fair offers free school supplies and medical screenings to any child who attends school in Moniteau County, regardless of age or income level.

The deadline to register is July 1. Registration forms can be picked up at The Moniteau County Health Center, Co-Mo Electric Cooperative’s Tipton office or online here or facebook.com/MoniteauBTSFair.Only those who register will receive a backpack filled with school- and grade-specific school supplies.

This year’s fair will feature entertainment from gymnasts, tae kwon do classes, school mascots, drum lines, jugglers and more. In addition, Santa Claus will be making a visit to get a mid-year report on the behavior of area children.

“It’s always great to see the look on the kids’ faces when they see Santa Claus and realize it’s the middle of the summer,” said John Agliata, president of the board of the Moniteau County Alliance for Kids. “It can make the fact that they need to go through some medical screenings before getting a chance to sit on his lap or get their school supplies a little more bearable.”

The fair board is looking for volunteers to help at the event. Those who are interested  can email Agliata atjagliata@co-mo.coop or call him at Co-Mo Electric at (800) 781-0157. Volunteers who can assist from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. make ideal helpers, Agliata said, but two shifts are available for those who can’t. The shifts run from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lunch will be provided to volunteers after the fair is over.

“Our volunteers are our lifeblood,” said Andrea Kincaid, administrator of the Moniteau County Health Center and a member of the Alliance Board. “We always are looking for good help, for people who can put smiles on the kids’ faces. That’s what it’s all about.”

So far, the Alliance has received more than 400 registrations for this year’s event. Donationsare still being accepted. Checks can be made out to the Moniteau County Alliance for Kids and mailed to P.O. Box 220, Tipton, MO 65081. All proceeds go toward this event.
