Tipton, MO. (July 23, 2015) — Co-Mo Electric Cooperative members who donated money through the Operation Round Up program are helping pay for 26 local students to attend college.
The scholarships total $26,000, bringing the total since the program began to just under $500,000.
Members contribute to this fund by signing up to have their electric bills rounded up to the next full dollar. The Co-Mo Cares Board of Trustees selects the recipients from a multitude of applications. Other money from the Operation Round Up program goes to support things such as local food banks and individuals and organizations in need.
“Part of being a cooperative means having a genuine concern for a community. The generosity of our members through programs such as Operation Round Up allows us to do that and make a difference in the lives of some young people in our area,” said Ruth Ann Warnke, Co-Mo executive administrative assistant and coordinator of the Co-Mo Cares Board of Trustees.
To be eligible, students must have their permanent residence within Co-Mo’s service territory, though they do not have to receive electric service from the cooperative. Students must plan on attending an accredited technical or academic school.
“This program is a great way to invest in our youth,” said Ken Johnson, Co-Mo’s CEO/General Manager. “We look at these fine young people and see our future community leaders, future co-op members.”
The scholarship application period opens each year on April 1 and runs through the end of that month. Applications can be found online during that time at co-mo.coop/scholarships.aspx or through local high schools’ guidance offices.
